Hello XCOM community, I've been spending the last few days figuring out how to install and manage mods, something I had never done before. I was able to do it without too much trouble, and I consider myself to be a very competent Mac user but not one who knows anything about programming or really understands my OS. I usually let my computer think for me, at least until a landed transport comes. So, I thought I would do a write up of what I learned in case anyone would find it helpful. Any comments/questions would be appreciated. If people have corrections or easier ways to do it, please chime in. I did exactly this and it worked to my satisfaction, but I'm sure the process could be streamlined.

Equipment/OS: I play XCOM with EU and EW both purchased from Steam, b15f. My computer is a 2011 Macbook Pro running OSX10.9.4
A. Installing Long War Long War is available at http://www.nexusmods.com/xcom/mods/88/? To install it, download the file of the latest version for Mac/Linux. Once it's finished, unzip it-- I have RAR Extractor on my computer (free from the App store, https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/rar-extractor-free/id646295438?mt=12) and it handled the 7z decompression no problem. I don't even know what a 7z file is, so that's the level of computer illiteracy we are dealing with here. It's possible your computer already has something that can do this. Open the enclosing folder(s) to find 'Install-LW-OSX.sh' Right click on it and select Open With>Other. Change 'Recommended Applications' to 'All Applications' and search for Terminal. Once it's opened, follow the directions in Terminal. All these instructions are in the ReadMe file enclosed with your Long War download; I just thought I would repeat them here.
B. Installing Mods Here's where it gets tricky. Most mods are handled by .exe files, which Macs don't run. To open and run them, many people use a popular open-source application called Wine. There are several variants, and there is likely a slightly easier way to do this, but I successfully used Wineskin Winery (http://wineskin.urgesoftware.com/tiki-index.php) by following the steps at (http://www.addictivetips.com/mac-os/how-to-run-windows-applications-on-mac-with-wine/). Very easy to use if you just follow those directions. I decided to kill a few birds with one stone: rather than figuring out how to deal with a bunch of mods separately, I downloaded eclipse666’s AMAZING Mod Manager (http://www.nexusmods.com/xcom/mods/620/) and followed the directions on addictivetips to create the wrapper for it. From here on out, these directions apply to using the Mod Manager as a specific tool for managing mods. I can tell you that it works and is easy. Wghost has produced the PatcherGUI and UPKUtils tools that are cross platform and will work on Mac, and let you do more things, from what I understand. But you have to build the programs yourself and that was above my level. Open the Mod Manager with Wineskin.
Now, find your XCOM folder. This is only slightly different than on PCs. Mine is at MacintoshHD>Users>Admin>Library>Application Support>Steam>SteamApps>Common>XCom-Enemy-Unknown. Command-Shift-H is a useful shortcut to take you to MacHD>Users>Admin (or whatever account you are using). Use this path to fill in the top field on the mod manager with your XEW folder (MacintoshHD>Users>Admin>Library>Application Support>Steam>SteamApps>Common>XCom-Enemy-Unknown>XCOMData>XEW). Mine looked like this: http://imgur.com/uGKDaMshttp://imgur.com/kwBn2rO (continuation of the Application Support folder)
Next, go back to Nexusmods and download the WINDOWS version of Long War that you are running, as well as the Dev Console if you want it. The Mod Manager needs a .exe file to extract the Long War files (as far as I can tell; it didn’t work with the mac/linux LW install files). Drag these files into the XCom-Enemy-Unknown folder and find them in the same way. Note that the thing you want out of the Dev console file is the Engine.upk file.
This is the good part. Download all the mods you want. This community has produced amazing things and there’s a lot of good stuff to choose from. The Mod Manager needs the .txt files and only the .txt files. Open each .txt file and read it. A lot of them have customizable aspects to them; for example, eclipse666’s very cool Virtual Reality Training mod lets you choose how much XP your soldiers can gain per OTS level. Read them, and copy the .txt files into the “Mods” folder of the Long War Mod Manager. See: http://imgur.com/iF5YQdi Make whatever changes you want to those files (or don’t if there’s no customizable aspects), and save them. Refresh the Mod Manager running under Wine, and they should show up. Pick whichever ones you want and Update Long War. The final setup before hitting update will look something like this: http://imgur.com/SNDKkHv
Start XCOM and great plasma dragons, it works! Sight ring indicators by eclipse666 (and the toggle), dev console, all there!
C. The Easy Part: .ini Edits This is the same as on PC but there are a couple tips that can help, I think. First is that it is definitely helpful to use a text editing software other than TextEdit (my computer’s default). I downloaded the free TextWrangler (http://download.cnet.com/TextWrangler/3000-2351_4-10220012.html?tag=bc) and opened the .ini files with it and it worked like a charm. We want to access primarily the defaultgamecore.ini file, but all the others are in the same place. This is in MacintoshHD>Users>Admin>Library>Application Support>Steam>SteamApps>Common>XCom-Enemy-Unknown>XCOMData>XEW>XComGame>Config. I made a backup of the entire config folder before I started changing anything. The LW Wiki says that for Mac users, you should probably also edit the same file in the Feral Interactive directory. I don’t know if this is actually necessary but I did it and it worked for me. The equivalent file is XComGameCore.ini, found in MacintoshHD>Users>Admin>Library>Application Support>Feral Interactive>XCOM Enemy Unknown>XEW>MacInit. Again, I made a backup of the whole folder. Editing the .ini files is very straightforward if you read the directions inside them; just make sure that you make the same changes to the XComGameCore.ini as you do to defaultgamecore.ini (if you’re doing both). Obviously, this goes for all the .ini files unless it turns out not to be necessary. I figured better safe than sorry. Then boot up LW and check out your sweet new perk trees or cheaper MECs and whatnot. My successfully edited engineer perk tree: http://imgur.com/kzCprZW
D. Wipe on the First Mission Undoubtedly the easiest part. But weren’t those sight indicator rings beautiful?
